Candidates should demonstrate the following minimum qualifications:
- A primary professional interest in teaching elementary classroom music
- Strong personal musicianship
- Knowledge of child development at each level of instruction, with special attention to motor skills
- Ability to plan and implement sequential instruction for music reading
- Working knowledge of the voice at the elementary school level
- Sing confidently to demonstrate correct technique
- Conduct music accurately and expressively
- Play chordal accompaniments on piano
- Play simple folk songs on recorder
- Knowledge of Orff and Kodaly approaches sufficient to incorporate appropriate elements into an eclectic instructional program
- Working knowledge of basic classroom instruments
Salem Heights Elementary is located in South Salem and is a part of the Sprague High School attendance area. This assignment includes eight general music classes that meet two times per week for 30 minutes per session plus choir twice a week. Classes are taught on Wednesday and Friday.
